Your first NJ dispensary visit: exactly what to expect.
It's easier than a liquor store run — but there are four things worth knowing before you walk in, and one discount most first-timers walk right past.
1. What to bring
- ID: any government-issued photo ID showing 21+. Out-of-state is fine — you don't need to be an NJ resident.
- Payment: most NJ dispensaries are cash or debit only (credit card networks won't touch cannabis). There's almost always an ATM inside.
- That's it. No medical card, no appointment, no paperwork.
2. How it actually goes
- Security checks your ID at the door — every visit, everyone, even if you're clearly 50.
- You either browse a menu (screens or tablets) or a budtender walks it with you.
- You order, they build it from the back — products are behind the counter, not on shelves you grab from.
- Pay, get a sealed bag and a receipt. Keep it sealed until you're home — opened packages in a car are a problem.
3. What to say to the budtender
Skip strain names. Say the effect you want: "something relaxing that won't knock me out," "social and giggly," "help me sleep," "functional daytime." Budtenders are good at translating that — it's the question they wish everyone asked. If you're new or coming back after years, say so and start low, especially with edibles (5 mg or less, wait a full 2 hours before more).
The mistake everyone makes: not mentioning it's their first visit. Most NJ dispensaries run 10–25% first-timer discounts — but plenty only apply it if you ask. Say it before they ring you up. We keep a live list of first-time deals near you.
4. The rules that follow you out the door
- Buy limit: 1 oz equivalent per transaction; carry limit 6 oz — full breakdown in our plain-English NJ laws guide.
- Keep it sealed in the car (trunk is the safest habit).
- It stays in NJ — don't cross state lines with it.
